Road accidents: more victims and more young people involved

According to the Report released by the National Institute of Statistics (Istat) and the Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI), 2022 saw a significant increase in road accidents.

The most frequent causes of accidents
Distracted driving, failure to follow the right of way and speeding are confirmed as the most frequent causes of wrong-way driving. The three groups together account for 38.1 per cent of cases (82,857), a value that has remained stable over time. Driving too fast is the most penalised behaviour, accounting for 38.7% of the total.

Technology helps
Road safety is becoming increasingly hi-tech thanks to the widespread use of in-car telematics. In this regard, the satellite and geo-localisation devices of Viasat (now part of Targa Telematics), make it possible to detect a multiplicity of information, from that relating to the vehicle to that concerning driving style, fuel consumption and even the external parameters with which those behind the wheel have to deal. Without a doubt, they represent an effective response for the detection of a possible accident: in the event of a crash, in fact, they automatically detect the accident, even if the driver is unable to call for help, allowing the 24/7 Operations Centre to send help promptly. Thanks to this immediate response, it is possible to limit the damage caused by the accident and, in many cases, save lives.
